CLA-3 (Conjugated Linoleic Acid) is a free fatty acid derived from sunflower oil. Our CLA-3softgels contain a minimum of 70% CLA in every batch. Scientists estimate that our food supply once contained much higher levels of CLA before the advent of modern agricultural and animal feeding methods. As a result, CLA may be lacking in typical refined diets

CLA is found in beef and dairy fats. When cattle feed on grass, their special digestive system converts the linoleic acid content in grass into conjugated linoleic acid. Humans cannot produce CLA, it has to be obtained through the diet.

However, scientists have found that we don't get enough CLA in our diet anymore. There are two reasons. First, cattle today are seldom pasture grazed. Instead they are fed food (grains and soy) which result in up to an 80% reduction in CLA production. Secondly, Americans and others consume significantly less beef and dairy products than just 20 years ago. The result is that the natural levels of CLA in our diet has been significantly reduced.

What is CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID?

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID (CLA) may be one of the most significant bodybuilding nutrients! CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID occurs naturally in a wide variety of food, and particularly in beef and dairy products. It is not a new discovery (CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID (CLA) was discovered by accident in 1978), but a better understanding of it's effects are leading to potential applications that are extremely new and exciting. In more than17 years of research, CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID has been shown to be an anticarcinogen in several animal models, reduce the adverse catabolic effects induced by immune stimulation in rats, mice and chickens, enhance growth performance in rats and inhibit plaque formation in rabbits fed an atherogenic diet at least in part via changes in lipoprotein metabolism. Scientists have begun to study CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID's affect on metabolism, energy retention and balance between body fat and lean body mass.

What does CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID do?

In controlled studies, animals that had their diets supplemented with CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID increased their body protein (muscle tissue) while at the same time had a significant decrease in body fat.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID inhibits the body's mechanism for storing fat and causes the body to utilize fatty reserves for energy.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID also increases hormone sensitive lipase activity. This is an enzyme which breaks down fats stored in fat cells on the body. The fatty acids are returned to the blood stream to be used by muscle cells as an energy source.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID has been shown to inhibit lipoprotein lipase. This is an enzyme which breaks down fat gobules in the blood so that adipocyte (fat cell) uptake (body fat accumulation) can occur. The inhibition of lipoprotein lipase results in reduced fat deposition.

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID also has powerful antioxidant properties. It has been proposed that adding CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID to foods may prevent mold growth and oxidation.

Not only has CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID has been shown to increase muscle mass while reducing body fat, studies have also shown remarkable anti-catabolic, antioxidant, immune enhancement, and anti-cancer benefits. Several other studies have even revealed dramatic cholesterol reducing effects.

Can I get CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID from regular food?

CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID occurs naturally in foods such as cheese, milk, beef, and lamb as well as many processed foods. One processed food that’s high in CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID is Cheez Wiz®. However, getting enough CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID from your diet for the preferred benefit would require considerable intake of foods (ie Calories) like this. It's not only impractical, but would also have seriously negative impacts on your metabolism due to the high caloric penalty you would pay.

On average, foods rich in CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID contain approximately 7 milligrams of CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID per gram of fat. For the equivalent amount of CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID in one of our capsules, you would have to consume over 64 grams of fat! To consume the recommended intake of CONJUGATED LINOLEIC ACID for the desired lean muscle gain and fat loss benefits, you would have to take in an incredible 579 grams of fat from foods rich in this unique nutrient. That’s over 5000 calories from fat. This is totally impractical in every sense of the word.

Are there any side effects or interactions?

The side effects of CLA are unknown, due to the limited research in humans. However, one unpublished human trial reported isolated cases of gastrointestinal upset.
